When searching for our perfect first home, the one thing we were looking for was character. As we peered through the entryway of Roslyn Road and saw the intricate ceiling roses in the cornices of the timber panelled curved wall, we knew we’d found it. Treading down the rabbit warren that opened into a pokey kitchen, we saw past the leaks in the roof, the lack of storage and tiny bedrooms to what might be.

As featured on The Design Files, Roslyn Road has been renovated with the key design aspiration of creating a home in line with the existing character of the space. A wall enclosing a two-metre bedroom was removed to generate space in the current dining room, and we transformed a second living room into our third bedroom to keep sleeping and living quarters separate. The existing ceiling roses and cornices remain to preserve the design’s history, while the curved timber kitchen island mimics the palette of the warm, walnut timber architraves and panelling in the entry.

The deep shaker profile on the joinery, complemented by the warmth cast through restored leadlight windows on cream and timber furnishings presents a modern take on art deco design. The green palette through the bedrooms lulls you into a sense of ease, then you enter the bathrooms, where relaxation is guaranteed; sandy Venetian plaster, bejmat clay and travertine tiles combine for a day-spa-style relaxation experience. Vintage bar lights throughout the living areas were chosen as a final nod to the traditional character of the space and are reflected throughout the bespoke design to create a sense of timeless comfort, reminiscent of my childhood home.
